How to Apply Beard Oil Like A Boss: A Step-by-Step Guide

You’re Rocking a magical and mystical beard which means that magical beard needs to be taken care of. Proper beard care is necessary to keep your beard looking, smelling and feeling good. There are many ways to care for, style and maintain a healthy beard. However, a must have product is Beard Oil. Beard oil is the #1, utmost important, head honcho, chief, and single most paramount tool for taking care of your beard. There’s a lot to know about beard oil and you can find more Information on the essentials and what makes a quality product in our previous blog “Beard Oil: A Staple of Beard Care”.

There are two ways to ensure you are getting the most out of your beard oil and your beard:

1) Buy a quality product

2) Sharpen your beard application skills.

Using a quality beard oil is imperative but equally as important is knowing how to apply it properly. Don’t worry, it’s not rocket science, in fact it’s quite simple. However, it is essential to use and apply beard oil correctly to ensure you are getting the best results. What is the point of using oil, if it’s not used correctly and doesn’t work, right?!

It is important to remember: Beard Oil is for your skin.

Like anything else, understanding the intended result and function of a product you are using will equip you to better understand how to get the most out of it. Oil for your beard is no different. Applying beard oil is meant to keep the skin under your beard hydrated and moisturized, which keeps it free from flaky, itchy, dry skin.

It is one of, if not the most important ways to keep your beard free of flakes and itch. It also helps keep the hair from becoming brittle and breaking, which means your beard stays dapper and well styled.

If you’ve ever experienced it, you know that Itchy, flaky, dry skin can make having a beard unbearable. In fact, itch and flakes are one of the main reasons people shave their beards off completely. BUT WAIT, put the clippers down!! Before you give up entirely on the magical and wonderful beard you’ve grown, a good beard care and oil regimen may be what you need.

Throwing some oil in your beard is not hard, but do you know how to apply beard oil to get the best result? Here is a step-by-step guide on How to Apply Beard Oil.

  • Wash Your Face and Beard

  • Using warm water wash your face and beard thoroughly.
  • We recommend using a Beard Wash every 2-3 days to get the best clean without stripping away the natural oils needed to keep your beard and skin healthy.
  • Applying your beard oil right after a shower can be an easy and convenient way to work it into your routine.

  • Dry to 90%

After cleaning your face and beard thoroughly, use a clean towel to pat your skin and beard to about 90% dry. The idea is to keep you skin and beard slightly damp. Having warm and slightly damp skin will allow it to absorb the beard oil better and will keep it hydrated longer.

  • Warm damp skin is what you want when you apply beard oil. This is another reason applying it after a shower works so well. The warmth and steam from a hot shower help to open your pores and thoroughly warm your skin. Application of oil within a few minutes of stepping out of a hot shower can get you great results!

  • Apply Oil to the Palms of Your Hands

Take a Quality Beard Oil and put 4-6 drops in the palm of your hand. Rub the palms of your hands together to evenly distribute the oil over your palms and fingers. Your hands are the best tool to apply the oil, so you want to make sure they are evenly covered.

  • Less is more when it comes to beard oil, it’s doesn’t evaporate like water, so you’ll want to make sure not to use too much. Too much oil can leave your beard looking like an oil slick. It’s a good idea to start with less and add more if needed.
  • Depending on the length of your beard and your skin type more oil may be necessary. You will have to experiment to find what works best for you.

  • Massage Oil into Beard

Comb your fingers through your beard and gently massage the oil into your skin. It is best to start under your beard and move toward your chin and the sides of your face. The key is to get the oil onto the skin and roots of the hair before the rest of the beard.

  • Using your finger tips to massage the oil into your skin can be helpful to get proper application and absorption. Plus, it feels great! Who doesn’t love a mini face massage?!
  • Make sure to go against and with the grain of hair growth to make sure you are applying it thoroughly
  • Don’t forget your mustache! The ‘stache is a significant and important player in the magical beard game so make sure to apply oil thoroughly to the skin under your mustache as well.

  • Comb Beard

Use a Wooden Beard Comb to comb the beard into place and spread the oil evenly throughout.

  • We recommend using a wooden comb because metal and plastic combs cause static, which can damage your beard hairs. Wood combs are anti-static and typically have wider teeth, which will help prevent painful snagging.
  • Combing your beard is also a great way to reduce ingrown hairs, detangle any knots and train the hair how to grow for that tamed, groomed look.

  • Re-apply Daily or As Needed

Our recommendation is to apply beard oil daily within a few minutes after a hot shower. However, depending on the dryness of your skin, length and thickness of your beard, and the climate you live in, it may be necessary to apply more or less frequently to maintain properly hydrated skin.

  • It’s important to keep in mind the different variables that affect the overall health of your beard and skin in order to figure out what works best for you.

Every beard is different, so you will have some trial and error to figure out what works best for you.

Here are a few variables to take into consideration:

Length- The longer the beard the more product you will need. A longer beard also means the skin under the beard has been covered for quite some time so don’t forget to care for it!

Thickness- A thick beard can make getting the oil on the skin more challenging, so more oil may help to ensure the skin and roots of the hair are well covered.

Humidity- Moisture levels of the air have a big impact on the hydration of our skin and hair. More humid areas naturally provide more moisture whereas less humid areas naturally result in your skin and beard being on the dry side.

Skin Type- Your skin already naturally produces some oil to stay hydrated but typically not enough to keep up with a killer beard. Therefore, since the amount of oil skin produces varies from person to person, the amount of oil you’ll need and how frequently you will need to apply it will be specific to you.

Knowing how to apply beard oil well is vital to the overall health and appearance of your beard. Whether you have been sporting a beard for a long time or you are new to beard care, using beard oil and applying it well is essential. Trust us. Your beard will thank you.
